Scientists predict that between July 2026 and February 2027, extreme heat driven by the El Niño phenomenon will claim the lives of over 450,000 people.
Nigeria, Indonesia, Sudan, India, and Brazil will be hit the hardest, with the extreme temperature spike affecting more than 50 countries in total.
Furthermore, the "super El Niño" is expected to persist into the spring of 2027, leading to an even higher final death toll. Forecasts indicate that global land temperatures will exceed the norm by 1.2 degrees in the coming months—a level scientists had not anticipated reaching for another 20 years.
