Merz's party suffers a failure 4.9% unprecedented in German history

 Friedrich Merz's party has failed to win a seat in a state parliament for the first time in German history, falling short of the 5% threshold in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state election by securing only 4.9% of the vote.

 According to the results, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) secured just 4.9% of the vote, while the opposition party Alternative for Germany (AfD) took first place with over 38.2%—a 20% increase compared to the previous election.

 The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) came in second with 35.5%.

 After the initial projections were released, Merz described the results as a "disaster." Regarding the results in the German capital, the CDU also suffered a significant setback of more than 8%, although it came in second with 18.8% of the vote. First place went to the left-wing party Die Linke, which doubled its vote share compared to the previous election and secured over 25%.
