More U.S. service members have died in the Middle East during the war with Iran than the Pentagon has publicly disclosed, according to six U.S. officials who spoke to The Washington Post and were familiar with the Department of Defense's internal casualty data.
Five of the officials told The Post that there have been at least 22 military fatalities—four more than appear in the Pentagon’s public database, known as DCAS.
A sixth official, who like the others spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the data, said that 23 service members have died since February 28, when the Trump administration, in collaboration with Israel, launched the war in Iran
. Not all of the undisclosed deaths are directly linked to the conflict, but they involved U.S. personnel present in the Middle East during the ongoing hostilities, the official said.
