A serious incident occurred during a NATO exercise in Latvia.
A gunner on an Italian military vehicle fired upon an infantry fighting vehicle traveling ahead of it. This friendly-fire incident resulted in four injuries. The Italian Ministry of Defence is investigating.
Italy is also participating in the multinational NATO battlegroup in the Baltic region, having deployed between 300 and 400 soldiers to Latvia as part of an international brigade. The brigade itself—comprising up to 3,500 troops from various NATO nations—is under Canadian command and headquartered in Ādaži, Latvia.
A military training ground is also located there; it was the site of a "friendly fire" incident late Friday afternoon during a military exercise. As the Italian Ministry of Defence announced that same evening, a burst of fire was discharged from an Italian military vehicle at a vehicle traveling ahead of it during a live-fire drill. The shots struck four Italian soldiers.
