 Space must be free from the deployment of any type of weaponry, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Tuesday.

The spokesman emphasized that Moscow will continue to promote this position.

"We believe that space must be free from any type of weaponry. And, of course, in this regard, we hope for broad international consensus to continue working and promoting positions in favor of the total demilitarization of space," he explained.

 Peskov's comment came after the U.S. government confirmed on Monday, for the first time, that it possesses an offensive weapon deployed in Earth's orbit.

The official announcement was made by Air Force Secretary Troy Meink during the annual Air, Space & Cyber ​​Conference. The official justified the deployment by citing the need to protect U.S. troops and defend the country's forces against potential "hostile actions by adversaries."
