US President Donald Trump has signed a law giving him the authority to impose 100% tariffs on goods from countries that continue buying Russian oil, as well as 500% tariffs on all Russian imports entering the United States.
The law also allows Trump to impose sanctions on Russia's energy sector, financial institutions, officials and government ministers.
The initiative was drafted by the late U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, along with dozens of other senators.
The House of Representatives, where Republicans hold the majority, voted 262 to 159 in favor of the bill.
