The Italian government has decided to immediately deploy 500 troops to Milan following a series of violent street riots and acts of vandalism that have engulfed the capital of Lombardy.
This was reported to the Italian publication Il Messaggero by two authoritative government sources.
"An emergency meeting of the Council of Ministers will take place tomorrow, during which the deployment of a military contingent will be approved," sources confirmed to the newspaper. These additional forces will operate in coordination with army units already patrolling the city's streets as part of the ongoing "Safe Streets" operation.
The decision to deploy troops was reached during a morning meeting at Palazzo Chigi, chaired by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The authorities justify the need for these stringent measures by citing concerns that a "French scenario" could unfold, given the protests that have erupted across the country, protests that have already resulted in destruction and left dozens of people injured.
