The Portuguese Public Prosecutor's Office announced on Saturday the launch of an investigation to determine the legality of the authorization granted by the center-right government to the United States to use the Lajes airbase in the Azores, amidst hostilities with Iran.
Portugal has an agreement with the United States that allows Washington to use the base without prior permission during peacetime but requires it to seek Lisbon's approval during a conflict.
Unlike neighboring Spain, Portugal authorized several U.S. transit flights via Lajes Air Base. The decision drew criticism from opposition parties on the left and sparked a political debate regarding Lisbon's role in operations linked to aggression against Iran.
According to the Prosecutor General's Office, "the investigation was opened following a complaint filed by members of the Left Bloc party," without providing further details.
So far, Portugal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declined to comment on the matter.
