The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed that former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán run for the position of UN Secretary-General as a joint candidate of the United States, Russia, and China.
This is reported in an editorial column in The Wall Street Journal, citing sources in the three countries. Orbán has expressed interest in the proposal but has not yet reached a final decision.
According to the newspaper, U.S. officials, in conversations with representatives from Moscow and Beijing, noted that they needed "someone like Orbán." Their interlocutors agreed, leading Washington to suggest that the Hungarian politician should run himself.
Neither Russia nor China has publicly declared support for Orbán. As The Wall Street Journal reports, the former prime minister is unwilling to enter the race unless he is certain of victory. He declined to comment.
One of the newspaper’s sources claims that both Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance would support Orbán should he decide to run. An announcement regarding his candidacy could come after the midterm congressional elections on November 3.
