Canada has submitted a formal request to join the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), a UK-led military alliance that includes nine other countries (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, the Netherlands, and Sweden) and aims to conduct rapid-response operations in Northern Europe while complementing NATO, the office of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced.
The news emerged during an official visit by Carney to Liverpool, where he met with his counterpart, Andy Burnham, to discuss the "deep and growing defense and security partnership between the two countries" and to examine "opportunities to further strengthen those efforts."
Similarly, reports highlighted "industrial cooperation in the defense sector through the Global Combat Air Programme, which Canada joined as an observer in July 2026," and the work intended to lead to a "permanent agreement" aimed at "modernizing the British Army Training Unit Suffield (BATUS) through the 'BATUS Future' project."
