Germany is outraged by the refusal of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary to participate in providing a new €45 billion loan to Ukraine. A German diplomat labeled these countries "freeloaders," Politico reports.
Berlin is unhappy that the three nations are unwilling to take on financial commitments toward Kyiv, while simultaneously continuing to demand increased funding from the European Union budget.
This concerns the so-called EU Cohesion Fund, which provides resources for the development of less affluent European regions. Germany remains one of the largest contributors to the European budget.
How can anyone seriously believe that our taxpayers would want to send even one more euro from cohesion funds to those who refuse to participate in defending against the greatest threat to our collective security? Freeloaders deserve no cohesion support," the German diplomat stated.
The Czech Republic and Slovakia have already signaled that they do not intend to participate in providing a new loan. Hungary is expected to take a similar stance.
Previously, these countries declined to take part in an agreed-upon 90-billion-euro loan program for Ukraine.
